My work place is Saint Rose Hospital, and it's purpose is to help people.
2.Is it a small business, a medium sized business, or a large corporation?
Saint Rose is a large business.
3. What does it look like?
Saint Rose looks like a hospital.
4. What sorts of people does my workplace employ?
My workplace employs people who are organized and caring.
5. How many people work there?
Over one hundred people work at my work place.
6.Do most of the people there have a 4-year college degree, 2-year college degree, or technical certificate?
I would say more than half the people at my workplace have a four-year degree.
7.Who does my workplace serve?
My workplace serves the people in the community, providing them with better health and services.
8.What are the strengths of my workplace?
One of the main strengths in my workplace is the work environment itself. It is very friendly and lively.

One weakness about my workplace is that it is not yet paperless. the amount of paper used in my workplace could be reduced.

My Mentor: Oct. 18. 11 - Blog 2.

1.What is my mentor’s name and job? (If I had more than 1, describe them both.)
My mentor's name is Zaida Negron. She is a Nurse who works with many patients. Her daughter is named Serinity Negron and because Serinity is my girlfriend I was able to land the job.Zaida is a very nice woman and enjoys her workplace very much.

2.What is their typical day (or week) like?
A typical week is like a wheel of time. Going around and around and around. Some days are fun and some days are boring. However no mater how boring or fun I am always learning something new, which to me, is the best part of the whole experience. I hope to keep learning more throughout this WLE experience. So far I have learned a lot.

3.How did they become interested in this field and what skills/education background did they need?
The people in my work place became interested in this field typically because they are all caring people.
The money and the cars has nothing to do with the actual work being done. To be good at a job you have to love what you do. My joy and their joy comes from helping people. They inspire me to be a better person and it makes me excited for the future.

My Tasks Oct. 25. 11 - Blog 3.

1.What is my main responsibility? What is my “title”?
My responsibility is varied among several tasks like filing, data sheets, and following the nurses. I am simply known as a volunteer. I also check in patients and register them on a day to day basis. Filing is one of the more important tasks. It is extremely  boring but also relaxing. I hope I learn new skills as I continue my work here.

2.What other types of tasks am I completing each week?
Each week I could be doing the following: Filing, pulling files, or putting data in the computer. Putting new and accurate data into the computer is very important. Zaida has been teaching me how to register patients who have special files. Zaida has also taught me how to call a patient and have their file pulled up on the computer. Right now there is just a lot of computer work at my WLE.

3.What is a regular day like? Describe it from start to finish.  Use examples and tell stories.
A regular day at my WLE is doing some filing in the morning then grabbing some breakfast and heading back to work. For the remainder of the day I check in patients or follow nurses around which isn't to bad. I am always learning something new from a nurse. Just today I learned how to do a pee test. It was awesome. They told me the pee goes to a special lab in Washington and New York. I basically just learn new information all day and eat a great lunch mid way through and continue on with my filing. A regular day starts at 7;30 an and ends at 4:00 pm. It is basically completing the several tasks listed above.

My WLE Project Nov. 1. 11 - Blog 4.

1.Describe what I am thinking I’ll do for my WLE project.
For my WLE project I am thinking of listing the various jobs in my workplace along with details and the steps it takes to abstain
one of these positions. It will consist of me going around my workplace and taking notes from each position inside of my workplace. I very much look forward to working with my co-workers. It will be nice to learn various approaches into the medical field. I am very excited.

2.How did I come up with this idea?  Explain my thinking.
I came up with this idea after I talked with my mentor. She suggested it to be honest and I was just so intrigued with the idea that I couldn't resist. Plus it beat filing all day. I really like talking to people and forming bonds with individuals. It is the funnest thing to do in my workplace because they all have very interesting stories. I believe that is another reason why I decided to do this particular project.

3.Why am I excited to actually do this project for the next 3-4 weeks?
I am excited to do this project, but it is also necessary. I look forward to talking with my mentors co-workers and getting to know them. I find that this project will be extremely helpful to those interested in the medical field. I believe it is a good intro that will get them on their feet and excited to participate in the filed of medicine. I hope they are excited as I am about this. The countless years of experience I will right down with be with me forever and hopefully I will be able to utilize some of this info into my own life.

4.In Academic Seminar, you’ll get help in actually planning out your project, but for now, type your brainstorm of what you’ll need to accomplish in order to finish your project in the next 3-4 weeks.
For this project I plan to take notes whenever I am interviewing someone from my workplace, including from my mentor. I also plan to make a keynote describing what I will be doing.

Progress on your WLE Project Nov. 8. 11 - Blog 5.

1. What did you do at your WLE today?
For my WLE today I spent my time organizing files and calling patients with the hopes of seeing a patient come in with an injury. It isn't the most pleasant thought you when u think about it logistically, but it sure beats filing and calling patients all day. So far I have not seen a single injury besides a few cuts and scratches. So other than wishing and hoping, all I did was file.

2.  What did you and your mentor your mentor talk about regarding your project?
During my WLE, my mentor and I discussed the ongoing project I had planned for my internship. My mentor gave me ideas on how I should go about asking each member in the department about their specific positions. We also discussed what kind of questions I should ask. My mentor was able to give me a small synopsis on each person in the department and told me which people would be good people to interview. I wanted to get a lot of information so my mentor was able to direct me to the most talkative people in the department.

3.What have you accomplished on your project so far?
On my project thus far I have accomplished three interviews with members in my department. To do this, I went around during my spare time in my workplace and asked each participant for 5-10 minutes of their time. I used similar techniques that Impact Academy has taught me and was able to question each person effectively and efficiently without appearing to be rude or hasty. While doing this I was able to learn from the information I was given, particularly from a Physician Assistant, who shall not be named. He told me a lot about his own process and approach towards the Medical Field. I would say today was a successful day because I was able to gather a decent amount of information for my WLE project.

Leadership Skills Nov. 15. 11 - Blog 6.

1. What leadership skill(s) am I using the most? (Think Critically, Complete Projects Effectively, Collaborate Productively, or Communicate Powerfully?)
The leadership skills I am using the most at this point would have to be completing projects effectively. As my WLE days go by, I realize I must begin prioritizing what the most important task of the day is and focus on completing that singular task. From there I am able to work down the list of things to accomplish based on the importance of a problem. Today I had to utilize that skill. Finding time to complete several more interviews and continue doing my work was essential to the productivity of my day.

2.   How well am I using this leadership skill at my WLE?  How could I improve?
As of now, I would say I am using this leadership skill very well. My day-to-day planner helps me keep organized and also allows me to accurately jot down what my interviewees are saying. One way I would be able to improve this skill is by balancing the types of work I have to complete. So office work could be balanced with school work and project time. I would like to become more adept at this skill until the point I am able to have a proper balance between my WLE life and my School life. I believe they are separate.

3.How does this leadership skill help me do my work?
This leadership skill helps me do my work because it helps me do my work even more efficiently and with little hesitation or pause between tasks. I find that this skill helps me complete my projects faster by keeping me focused and on point for that particular job. I use this skill in my workplace by switching from WLE project work to things my mentor asks that I get done in a given day. I find that this skill helps me switch from task to task much quicker in a more timely manner.

4.What leadership skill does my mentor use the most?  Why?
My mentor used the leadership skill collaborating productively the most. My mentor's job required that she work with the patients at her job. She was able to work productively with other people because she was a very patient person and also very kind. My mentor taught me enough about patient communication so that I too could work with patients and register them into the system. My mentor also collaborated productively because she was able to speak spanish. Knowing a second language helped her work with spanish speaking patients.

What I learned, Reflection Nov. 22. 11 - Blog 7.

1.What have I learned about myself (what I can do, what I like) because of this WLE experience?
By going to my WLE I have learned that the work place varies specifically in terms of professionalism. My last WLE was very relax and chill, however my new WLE required that I dress in a certain way and carry myself in a manner suitable for my work place. Wearing scrubs is just one example of the strictness of my WLE work place. I also needed to wear a name tag at all times to show that I was a volunteer. By doing these things I was able to learn that I would be a good fit for this environment. I discovered I liked the medical field more than I originally had. I ultimately want to go into the medical field for my career .

2.What challenges did I face during my WLE and how did I overcome, address, or learn from them?
Some challenges I faced while at my WLE were the countless amount of times I had to file. That task in itself was a challenge because I had to concentrate on staying awake and continuing my work. It was a very good experience though because I was able to realize what mind set I would need to be in to complete boring work. At first I thought school work was as boring as it could get, but repeatedly doing the same task over was even more tiring and boring. Overall I had a good experience and was able to discover my own methods for completing boring work.

3.What passions, values, or life lessons did I learn from this experience?
One passion I learned from this experience was my own passion in assisting and aiding people. I discovered that if I was able to enter a field of work that I would enjoy and gain some sort of self accomplishment from it would be the medical field.

4. How was my creativity put to use during my experience?
During this project my creativity was used when I was doing my WLE project. Thinking of unique questions was an important aspect of interviews in order to make each interview different yet informational.

5.How did my WLE placement affect me, a community, my environment, or a particular group of people?
My WLE affected me because I was able to see the medical field at a closer vantage point. Meeting nurses and doctors was a good experience and through my interviews I was able to learn even more about the profession. It was a good experience that helped develop my passion even more.

6.What do I believe now that I didn't before about this profession?
I believe that it is very possible for people with an AA degree to receive this sort of job. This job is decent paying and can provide for a small family.

7.What specific skills did I learn or practice during my WLE that are important in this profession?
This job taught me how to take the blood pressure of an individual and also file medical records. It is very important that I learned how to work the files on the computer and also the new programs so I could effectively take the names of patients and register them into the archive. I also learned the fast pace the medical field requires from each individual. I hope to apply that same support towards all I work with in the future.

8.If someone were to ask me what I did at my WLE was important, what would I say?
I would say that working with patients was the most important. Getting a smell of large amounts of blood is also something that a doctor must get used to. It is imperative that one remains organized and efficient.

9. How will what I have learned from my WLE affect the choices I make in the future?
My WLE has already shaped my future decisions. Becoming a Neurosurgeon is my passion and this has only helped further my future aspirations. It has made me more excited and has even prepared me for organization and medical files and terminology I will need to become familiar with.

Professionalism Nov. 29. 11 - Blog 8.

1.Remember way back when you were looking for your WLE?  In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to…
Talk to my girlfriends mom and ask her to take me as an intern. I also had to go through a health presentation and receive my most updated set of shots. It was a very fun and exhilarating experience.

2.The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by…
Knowing people and having connections. That is the number one way to land a job. Having a decent resume and getting in with the right people and not being afraid to humble yourself in the presence of someone who knows more than you do. It is very important that you present yourself at your personal best at all times, making sure not to offend anyone at all costs. That is the best way to get hired.

3.As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means…
Presenting yourself at your best at all times. It also means working past the boring tasks of the day and finding the most efficient ways to completing a project on time. It is crucial that one comes to their workplace in the proper attire, making sure to present themselves as intelligent individuals and also capable individuals. Being respectful and nice is also necessary to complete work with co-workers and to maintain healthy relationship with your bosses. If these codes of conduct are not followed one may be in jeopardy of losing his or her job.

Life at my WLE Dec. 6. 11 - Blog 9.

1.What did you do today?
Today I did some basic filing and patient registration. I also filed away four boxes of old patients and sent them off to the off-site facility. That is an important task that needs to be accomplished each year. It is important because new patients must be registered and taken into the data base. I worked on that for the majority of the day and also followed the nurses around to see the new injuries. One man was getting face surgery and had to get several stitches to his eye. It was a gruesome but beautiful sight.

2.How have you improved as an intern?
I have improved tremendously as an intern. From the first day I arrived I was a babe compared to all of the other workers. However after some weeks in the field I have learned a larger portion of what my mentors job entails. She has taught me so much while I have been here. Working with patients has always been my dream and she has only taken me one step closer to that dream. My professionalism also increased. I am on time more and acute. Like a triangle.

3.What about your workplace makes it a great or not so great place to work?
One thing that makes my work place great is the people. Working with certain members in my workplace has been a great experience that I will never forget. They were always very friendly and welcoming even when they were having problems of their own. I hope to one day see each and every one of them again. One thing not so great about my workplace is the size. Meeting new people soon becomes scarce. Maybe I would have benefited more from a larger organization.

The End Dec. 13. 11 - Blog 10.

  1. .What final thoughts do you have about your WLE?
I am just thankful that I was given the opportunity to work at my WLE. I now have the experience to go in the medical field without any doubts. My heart and mind is set on helping people. I just hope I can give what they have given me to my future intern. It would be a blessing to reciprocate this feeling of appreciation. I am overjoyed to know that everything has worked out at my WLE. Much love and thanks to Zaida and Serinity and all of the people at my WLE.

  2. .SENIORS: How will this experience affect your future decisions or goals?
This experience is going to be my future and I won't back down as long as I have God to back me up. I am dead set on pursuing this career. If anything this experience has given me more confidence and hope concerning this particular field. I am ready to enter the medical field with a open heart and mind and a manner of professionalism that will shock everyone.
